Location

CTFSF takes place at the glorious, the beautiful, the epic Doughboy Field in Golden Gate park. This location was partly chosen for its playing field, which involves wooded, clear, and hilly terrain, as well as the occaisional mudpit. Doughboy is our little gem. The Doughboy himself stands over the field, proudly acting as a symbol of something patriotic.

Terms:

  • Snowball: Children’s tights filled with flour and then tied off into compact, throwable projectiles.
  • Jail: A roped off area at either end of the field where players are forced to go if they get out.
  • Cheating: An ill-defined parameter that gets even iller with drink. You’re probably doing it, especially if you’re accusing someone else of same.
  • The Doughboy: A statue of a boy holding a wreath or something. Ostensibly a memorial.
  • Hiding the Flag: Depending on the variation, sometimes the teams hide the other team’s flag. Usually “hidden” means slightly out of reach. Tends to spur on accusations of cheating.
  • Hiding shit in his/her pants: Basic douchebag cheating. Hiding extra snowballs or your team’s flag in your pants. Considered lame. Grounds for being yelled at by the referee.

Positions

  • Open Field: Braveheart-stylie out-in-the-open screaming warfare.
  • Black Ops: Goes through the woods to get to the other side, usually to help liberate imprisoned comrades. Probably cheating.
  • Back Field: Around the woods. Seems dull, but more people get injured in this area than any other. No one can quite figure out why.
  • Guard: Guards the jail and, sometimes, the other teams flag. Turns crazy intense toward the end of a round. Very, very important position. Gets to flirt with imprisioned members of the other team.
  • Captain: Generally speaking, the person who is either the least or the most drunk. Or the loudest. Or the most quietly sinister.
  • Referees: People who must be obeyed at all times. What the referees say has to be obeyed immediately and to the letter. Even if it’s bullshit. They are the only connection with order in the game and must be respected as such.

Rules

There are two teams, usually themed by color (ie, yellow and red). Each team has a flag of corresponding color.

The game starts with the teams by their jail. Teams switch ends of the field with each game. Each player is given one snowball.

Getting hit with a snowball is an immediate out, unless the snowball is caught. If the snowball is caught, the thrower is out.

If you are out, you must immediately drop all snowballs you are carrying and your flag (if you have it), raise both your hands and walk to the opposite team’s jail.

To get out of jail, you have to pick up a snowball that has come inside your cell. You are then immediately back in play, and can either attack the other team or pass the snowball along to your imprisoned comrades.

Flag variants/How to win

  • Normal: Each team guards the flag of the opposing team. Teams must get their flag and bring it back to their own prison to win the game.

  • Kamakazi: Both flags are in the middle of the field. Teams have to carry their own flag to the opposite team’s prison.
